From what age can we hike a child?

The child must have some physical capacity. Before the age of 7, it is therefore preferable to favor star trekking over short distances (about 1 km per year) rather than an itinerant trek. After this age, it is possible to make easy treks if the children are dynamic. At the age of 12, they can follow the rhythm of adults (obviously at equivalent training).

What is the main risk foe the child during the trek?

If your child is of a suitable age and is dynamic, the main risk is boredom. Indeed, the steps of 6h can seem boring. Once the boredom is installed, the child will not pay more attention to what surrounds him and the day risks being unpleasant for everyone. To avoid this, there are some tips:

  • Provide snacks
  • Find conversation topics that captivate your attention
  • Make small games. For example, find a beautiful pebble to bring back as a souvenir. Or find shapes in the rocks that we cross …
  • Take regular breaks

Other usage tips ?

For the rest, it’s the same as with adults: a little physical preparation if needed, a zest of mental preparation (how will happen the trek, daily life during …), papers in good standing (passport or identity card, travel insurance) and adapted equipment (hiking shoe, hat, …).
