If you fancy the countryside, then the department of Mayenne in the Pays de Loire region should satisfy you. Halfway between the greenery of the Norman landscapes and the medieval beauty of the Périgord buildings, the Sarthe deserves to be known. Besides, to convince you, we offer you an overview of our last hike in Mayenne.
We park next to the church, then start our walk out of the village. We then quickly arrive on a dirt road that goes deep into nature. The latter is shaded and very pleasant. Plus, since it’s springtime, flowers line some areas, adding their vibrant colors to woodland greens and browns.
After having crossed some sheep grazing in a meadow, we arrive along a body of water which we skirt a few moments before arriving in front of the manor of Pierre Fontaine. As this is a private accommodation, no visit is possible. However, the view is superb over this sixteenth century stately home, positioned just in front of the lake.
After enjoying the view of the mansion, we set off again on the path. This then takes us through the cultivated landscapes of Mayenne. In particular, we have the opportunity to see cows and other tractors in action … We are even obliged to hurry on one end of the road to avoid being caught by a tractor and finding ourselves in its wake raising dust.
A varied hike that offers beautiful views and some nice animal encounters. What to appreciate the charm of the French countryside and more particularly that of Mayenne!
On the way back, we took the time to walk around the old village of Sainte Suzanne with its castle. The heart of the village is charming. To advise all lovers of old stones.
If you want to do this hike in Mayenne, you can find the GPS track, as well as the description of the route on the Visorando website (in french though).
