Walk to Omaha Beach

We suggest you take a shorter walk than usual. Indeed, we left a little late and in winter, we did not have much time in front of us. This is why our walk to Omaha Beach only lasts about an hour and a half. However, it offers a real concentrate of Normandy!

Omaha Beach

Start of the walk near the cemetery of Colleville

You can park in the outdoor car park at the Cemetery. This being nearby, it is possible to meditate for a moment to pay homage to the soldiers of the Second World War. Time was running out, we took the dirt road directly leading us to the monument dedicated to the 5th Engineer Brigade.

This passes next to bunkers in which it is possible to venture. Be careful in wet weather, the ground can be slippery. Once near the monument, the view is clear on the beach. After a moment of contemplation, we regain it by descending the wooden and grass stairs.

Omaha Beach Dunes

Walk to Omaha Beach

Arrived on the long Norman beach, we leave on the left with no other goal than that of appreciating the landscape which surrounds us. The sea in the distance at low tide, the sand crunching under our feet, the last vestiges of the landing and the sky, gray that day, above our heads. We have the opportunity to meet some isolated riders, then we quickly cross the dunes in order to head towards the forest.

Entrance to the Colleville forest

Last part of the walk in the forest

As the night began to fall quickly, I was unable to take photos to capture the “jungle” side of the walk. However, with the lush greenery, the omnipresent stream and the mud left by the rain, you could believe it! Moreover, if you go for a walk in wet weather, I recommend good waterproof shoes …

Walk back to the starting point of the hike

At the exit of the forest, we fall back on the road by which we arrived by car. After about ten minutes of walking, we find our vehicle.

Norman jungle

In conclusion

A very nice walk between the beach and the forest, in a loop lasting about an hour and a half (taking your time), and full of history what is more.

Hope this makes you want to go for this walk to Omaha Beach. There are also longer walks for those who feel like walking longer, like the one, for example, on Visorando (in french though).
