Why hiking in Serbia?

This country in south-eastern Europe has many borders: Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovine and the disputed Kosovo. This geographical crossroads is conducive to the mixing of history. Indeed, this people was originally composed of Greeks before the Slavs arrived in the 7th century. The Ottomans were the masters for more than four centuries before it was liberated and then regained full independence in 2006. All this already gives you an idea of why hiking in Serbia.

St George’s Cathedral in Novi Sad above is just one of the many monuments to see in Serbia. Starting with Paleolithic sites such as Lepenski Vir, until the Middle Ages which left a large number of monasteries and fortresses, and passing through the Roman Empire (Gamzigrad retained by UNESCO for example), you will be spoilt for choice!

For its authentic side

If the country has been, by its history, the scene of the passage of many peoples, there is one that has not yet conquered it. You probably guessed it, I’m talking about the tourist. Indeed, tourism is still underdeveloped in Serbia despite the large number of attractions of the country. So this is the perfect time to discover it in all its authenticity.

For gastronomy

Historical blends are often beneficial to a country’s culinary richness. Serbia is a good example. In addition to typical dishes such as pasulj (bean stew), you find standards from different countries:

  • German: sauerkraut or strudel
  • Greek: moussaka
  • Hungarian: goulash
  • Oriental: baklava

Your taste buds will inevitably find their happiness among all this choice!

For its natural landscapes

Although the mountains are not very high (the highest peak, Mount Djeravica peaks at 2,656m), they are still very present. Thus they cover about two thirds of the country. The latter has few plains except the north. Finally, in the centre, the forest dominates almost a third of the territory. In addition to this beautiful geography, there are many rivers, including the famous Danube. All this offers great opportunities to hike.
