Why hiking in Ladakh?

Little Tibet, as it is also called, is the highest region in India. Something to satisfy all those in search of spirituality or altitude. Especially since it is also the least populated region of the country. This gives some basics to the answer to why hiking in Ladakh. But let’s look at this in more detail.

Spiritual journey

There is a good reason why Ladakh is called “little Tibet“. Historically, around the tenth century, a Tibetan dynasty settled in the region and remained there for nearly seven centuries. It is only towards the seventeenth century that the rapprochement with India will be made. Thus, it is the only Buddhist region of India and many temples attest that it is the majority religion. We can cite, for example, the following monasteries:

  • Thiksey a few kilometers from Leh offers a superb view
  • Likir with the possibility of visiting its small temples
  • Deskit one of the most photogenic, in the Nubra region requiring a permit

Hiking in the middle of the peaks of Ladakh

Much of the region is located at an altitude of over three thousand meters and enjoys a very dry climate. This combination therefore offers beautiful mineral landscapes in the eyes of walkers. Moreover, there are many possibilities for treks in the region, from beginner to more experienced level. And if the summits tempt you, the Stok Kangri will allow you to reach its 6125m! For more information, you can find the story of Linda’s ascension (in french though). And if you’re worried about altitude sickness, take a look at our article on how to avoid AMS.

Visit Leh, the capital of Ladakh

The city, located at more than 3000m, is dominated by a palace offering a superb panorama on the surrounding region. It will also allow you to visit its many stupas, meet the locals with renowned hospitality, and taste its momos (typical steamed donuts).

Unexpected encounters

Did you think that camels and yaks couldn’t live together? Then Ladakh will surprise you. This mountain desert is indeed home to both species. While yaks are a common species in the mountainous regions of Asia, camels are a heritage of the Silk Road.
