Current events encourage us to take an interest in what is close to us at the moment. This is why we offer this list of peaks over 4000m in the Alps. This will make you want to organize treks around, or even climb them if you are a mountaineer. But before, as we are based on an official list, we will start by presenting the organization that established it.
The UIAA or the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation
This worldwide federation founded in 1932 has the following main missions:
- preserve mountains spirit
- promote secure and ethical mountain activities
- promote responsible and environment friendly tourism
- implicate young people and Olympic mouvement.

The list of 82 4000m peaks in the Alps
As part of its commitment to develop international mountaineering standards, the UIAA has officially classified the 82 4,000 m peaks recognized in the Alps.
General principle
The list is intended primarily for mountaineers. It is therefore not based solely on topographic criteria (which are in any case the main element), but also on complementary, more subjective criteria, capable of modifying the evolution of mountaineering.
The different criteria:
- Topographic: for each summit, the difference in level between it and the highest adjacent pass or notch must be at least 30 m.
- Morphological: takes into account the overall morphology and the appearance of a vertex.
- Mountaineering: it takes into account the importance of a summit from the point of view of mountaineering: the qualities of the routes that reach it, the historical significance and the frequency of its climbing.
